Yesterday was Day 2, and we spent all of it traveling back from my family's place. Nothing new to report with my face so far; I took my medicines as directed (Prednisone and Acyclovir). I wore the eye patch with my eye taped shut for the duration of the trip, just because it makes me feel a lot more secure. Of course, my face being paralyzed wasn't enough: Drew's car broke down in a spectacular fashion. There was lots of clanking and metal on metal. We learned today that his U-joint broke (I don't even know what that *is*), and it damaged the drive shaft in the process. This also somehow caused his battery to go dead, to the point that we couldn't even turn the hazards on. We had to call friends from several hours away to come rescue us, and then waited at a Huddle House for about 2.5 hours. We got home really late, but Drew got some sleep and made it to work this morning so everything turned out OK. Of course, for those of you playing along at home, that's a $1700 ER bill and a $1700 car bill in two days. Perhaps we will win the lottery? Andrew's car is really old, we're not even sure it's worth fixing, but that would take us down to one car that is about to celebrate its sweet sixteen. Have mercy.
Day 3: Today, I woke up covered in cat. Jellyfish was absolutely overjoyed that I was back; she kept trying to get between me and Andrew in the bed. When I tried to take the tape off my eye, it caused a little bruise, so I think I'm going to stop taping it; it doesn't actually hold it shut anyway.
I made an independent expedition across the street to the CVS. I got a couple of different kinds of eye drops, as well as some drinking straws since I can't drink that well right now. I stocked up on a bunch of different vitamins; mostly they were either ones mentioned in the blog I linked to in my last post, or the label said something about brain/nerve health. At the moment, I am taking (in addition to the Prednisone and Acyclovir): magnesium, B-12, B-6, L-Lysine, and a multivitamin that doesn't overlap with those. I am going to hunt down some B-1 and lecithin granules, and I think I'll stop there with the vitamins. I take the Prednisone in the morning, since it is known to keep people awake, and the vitamins with dinner. The Acyclovir has to be taken every 4 hours around the clock, which is a pain in the ass.
My mood today was a little grim, but I'm really embarassed about that. I mean, yes, I have a weird thing going on right now, but it's purely cosmetic (plus a little annoyance over the eye thing and the eating/drinking), and it could've been a lot worse. It will gradually get better. My case seems to be fairly mild. Still, it's a bit of a downer, and the fact that my vision in the BP eye has taken a hit (probably from not being able to focus) doesn't help me feel very confident going out and doing things on my own. I'll get better, I'm sure. I really hate being all teenage mopey all over the place and feeling sorry for myself.
Tomorrow, I have a doctor's appointment with my regular doctor at 10:15. I expect her to tell me that yes, this is Bell's Palsy, and refer me to a neurologist. AT 4:45, I have an appointment with an optometrist that will hopefully get me a contact lens for my right eye so that I can at least wear just the eye patch and be spared the indignity of wearing glasses over it. Both of those are pretty nearby, so I'm not too worried about the driving. In fact, the eye doctor is within walking distance. I am hopeful about these visits, it makes me feel like I am doing something.
I have had little muscle twitches on the BP side of my face all day. Normally, I think this would be irritating, but I am just really glad that stuff is working over there. I have spent most of the day (except for my trip to CVS and a brief trip to Target with Andrew) without the eye patch, and it's not so bad if I'm just around home. Obviously I can't wear it to drive, but I put it on before I get out of the car.
You're here for the pictures, right? Here they are. The first one is my face at rest. Notice my droopy left eyebrow and smooth forehead:
And here's one where I try to shut my eyes as hard as I can, followed by a big smile. It might look like both eyes are shut in this one, but the left eye won't actually shut all the way. You can kind of tell it looks more relaxed. In the smiling picture, it might look like the left side of my mouth is pretty slack, but just do a quick Google Image Search for Bell's Palsy smiles and you will see mine doesn't look so bad. :)
Whew. I think that's it for today! I'll update about the doctor's appointments tomorrow. Good night!
